IGNOU Ahmedabad came into existence in the year 1988 to spread education through distance learning to the students & un-reached people like: professionals, house wives, poor reside of remote area in jurisdiction of Gujarat state. In addition to increase literacy rate in the state, Government of Gujarat has provided land to IGNOU for establishing the Ahmedabad regional center.

Ahmedabad regional center has 60 study centers across the state, including study centers in Central Jail, Blind People Association, Ahmedabad and Tribal Academy, Tejgadh, Baroda. At Rajkot a sub regional centre has been established in a rented building on token basis provided by Saurashtra University, Rajkot; to lightened education for the students & willing to study of the population of Saurashtra and Kutchch.
