Ranchi as a Regional Center came into existence after the division of Bihar state into Bihar & Jharakhand in the month of March 2000. Indira Gandhi National Open University has established Ranchi regional center to provide open education/distance learning programmes to the people of Jharakhand state. The Regional Center has expanded its study centers across all district of the Jharkhand state. There are 52 study centers presently working in supervision of the Ranchi center & providing education to the students.

There are three Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITs) of EduSat have been installed & working properly.
The centers where these Satellite Interactive Terminals (SITs) of EduSat are Ranchi regional center & rest two are at Jamshedpur Study Centre and Hazaribagh Study Centre. Ranchi regional center offers all the courses/programme designed by IGNOU in distance education from Certificate Programmes to Postgraduate Programmes in various stream.
