Indira Gandhi National Open University has opened its regional center at Kolkata in 1998. In the year 2001, Calcutta was renamed as Kolkata by government of India.The regional center Kolkata is located in a rent free building of the state government named Bikash Bhawan at Salt Lake City, Kolkata. In the same building offices of the Ministers of Education & its department is also located. There is a Sub-Regional Centre at Siliguri having study center in its control for spreading open education/distance learning to the people of entire North Bengal.

IGNOU Regional Centre, Kolkata includes a big network of 66 regular Study Centres, programme specific Programme Study Centres and Special Study Centres established to achieve the objectives to serve the people of untouched areas by distance education.
